At Finlog we take environmental issues very seriously indeed. From this year, we now control our complete production from felling the trees to the final build.
We are very fussy where our trees are from, we make sure trees are planted from where they are felled, we don’t rely on any other large over funded organisation to do this for us, we do it ourselves. We inspect the trees, mark them, fell them and make sure the area is replanted to our satisfaction. The logs are taken to a local sawmill where all the waste is recycled into pellet fuel. From the saw mill, the timber is moved next door to the planers where the timber takes it shape, cutting the profile. Some of the logs are then laminated to be used for our 88, 110, 134, 165, 200 or 230mm laminated logs. By laminating the timber this ensures a longer life and a more efficient build process as well as obtaining a higher ‘u’ value throughout the life of the building and also less maintenance, hence less energy requirement. The logs are then transported by rail and road to our factory where the final ‘notching’ takes place.
Finlog are currently in negotiations with a community farm in Malawi, Central Africa, where we hope to make a contribution to a replanting scheme. Check the Finblog for latest news.
Environmental Statement.
By using C.A.D. (computer aided design) procedures we can minimise waste, but all waste is recycled naturally. Our factory is situated close to our other suppliers and within two hours drive of the ferry port, minimising road miles. We use a number of different ports in the UK to enable the road trip to site to be as short as is possible. Once the Finlog building arrives on site we use all the methods available to us to ensure we keep our carbon footprint ‘paw size’ or indeed a negative one. The preservatives we use are based on natural ingredients, the insulation we use can be made from lambs wool and recycled plastic or glass wool. We try to avoid using ridged insulation panels but this not always possible due to building regulations. We can obtain FSC Certification for our timber if required.
Every aspect of the Finlog way is done to not only provide value for money but also to be as aware of our surrounding as is practically possible. Every decision we make is to further this ideal. We do sometimes not take the easy route but it is a route we feel happy taking and that is why I feel confident that I am doing all I can to help reduce the impact we have on our world.
A product we are keen to promote is our laminated 230mm log, this can be built with a single skin in a total carbon negative manor, combine this with a solar water system or ground heat source system and it becomes one of the most ‘green’ ways of building possible. Green roofing can also be used on some buildings as well as concrete less foundations, as concrete (cement) is one of the biggest users of energy in the world. Using logs to build our home and garden buildings makes a real difference.
